Temperatures overnight slowed but did not stop water moving through the snowpack. History shows that a lag exists between the cooling of ambient temperatures and cooling deeper in the snowpack. We aren’t out of the woods yet with regards to wet avalanche activity, but it will look a little different.
- Wet loose sluffing in steep terrain is likely and may entrain significant amounts of snow. This is most likely to be a human triggered problem today and can be dangerous. Continue to carefully choose your timing and be aware of changing snow conditions depending on aspect, elevation and other terrain factors.
- Wet slab avalanches remain a dangerous potential risk. Dense debris may be slow moving but it is hard to escape once you are captured. The overnight freeze has been light and may have left some slopes teetering in the balance between strength and failure as water percolates down to crusts or weak layers. The best avoidance measure is to stay off of and out from under steep slopes.
