Points saillants

Strong winds have created wind slabs that can be easily triggered by the weight of a single person. A persistent deep slab avalanche hazard also exists above an elevation of 7,500 feet. These dangerous deep slabs are more likely to be triggered by snowmobiles but could be triggered by the weight of a skier. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations except for small pockets of very shallow wind slab on isolated terrain features like steep banks and road cuts.

    Skiers and riders can still trigger dangerous persistent deep slab avalanches at the mid and upper elevations. Large triggers such as a snowmobile, cornice failure or the release of a wind slab are more likely to initiate the failure of a deep, hard slab avalanche. However, the weight of a single skier could be enough to trigger one of these persistent deep slabs if a shallow, weak zone is encountered. These low probability/high consequence slides could range in depth from two to five feet and will carry severe consequences for anyone involved.

    South to west winds are drifting snow onto leeward aspects and cross loading avalanche starting zones. Wind slab avalanches one to two feet in depth are likely to be easily triggered by skiers and riders in upper elevation avalanche starting zones and cliff areas. Pockets of wind slab 6 to 18 inches in depth could be triggered by humans in steep avalanche starting zones and cliff areas at the mid elevations. Once triggered these slab have some potential to dig down and trigger dangerous deep slab avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

The system that brought moisture to the western Wyoming today will linger over the region tonight and then depart to the east. This system could bring another 4 to 8 inches of snow to the mountains and will continue to favor the Greys River area. Skies will be mostly cloudy on Tuesday with some areas of light snowfall. Temperatures will be in the single digits and teens. Winds will be from the west at 10 to 15 miles per hour with higher gusts.Soft slabs one to two feet in depth could be triggered by humans who venture into steep, wind loaded avalanche starting zones, cliff areas and steep chutes. These soft slab avalanches could be big enough to bury or injure a person. A persistent deep slab avalanche hazard also exists above an elevation of 7,500 feet. Dangerous deep slab avalanches could be human triggered on steep avalanche prone slopes with depths that range from 2 to 5 feet. These slabs are more likely to be triggered by snowmobiles but could be triggered by the weight of a skier. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at the mid and upper elevations (7,500 to 10,500 feet) and LOW below that elevation.
