Points saillants

Avalanche conditions remain very dangerous today! Triggering a large avalanche is very likely in many areas due to a very weak layer of snow buried 2-3' deep.  Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.  Be aware of steep slopes above you if you do venture out, and travel one at a time on sections of trail below avalanche paths.

    Many large natural avalanches occurred yesterday and some were triggered from a long distance away. Historically dry conditions in December formed a widespread weak layer that is now buried 1-2.5 feet below the snow surface. It remains likely that you'll trigger avalanches, some of them remotely, from gentle terrain above, below, or to the side of steep slopes over 30 degrees. These avalanches may surprise you as they could occur on treed slopes or occur naturally on steep terrain above you. They can also occur at elevations that recently had minimal snow coverage. If you are venturing out this holiday weekend, be aware of what or who is above you and stay in simple, low angle terrain.

    Large natural avalanche on Thursday near Smiths Fork that propagated a very long distance across the slope.

    Weak snow that formed during November varies in depth tremendously across this forecast zone. It is now located up to five feet below the surface in the snowiest areas of the Salt River Range and Palisades but is more shallowly buried in others such as the Wyoming Range. The last reported avalanche on this layer was triggered by a snowmachiner on December 30th near Gunsight Pass. Avalanches on this layer seem unlikely at this point but cannot be ruled out in the steep terrain depicted above. Moving avalanche debris from the more senstive layer described above could conceivably step down to this layer making any avalanche much more destructive.

Avalanche Discussion

The weak layer of near surface facets and surface hoar that was buried starting January 4th is much easier to trigger than it's cousin that formed in November.  Only time will tell if that deeper layer remains as a deep and persistent problem as it is to the north where it is more deeply buried.  It's important to bear in mind today that avalanches occured yesterday in many places near 7500' that held a thin snowpack. You can see photos and reports of avalanches here and here of bed surfaces with sagebrush and weeds and other observations from the zone of avalanches that were recently triggered remotely.
