Points saillants

For Sunday, human triggered avalanches will be unlikely in the Newberry zone. However, "low danger" does not mean no danger. As always, be on the lookout for any signs of unstable snow in isolated and extreme terrain, where lingering avalanche problems could exist. If in doubt stick to lower angle slopes, especially in and above terrain traps.

Avalanche Discussion

Saturday's weather came in warmer and weaker than forecasted for the Newberry zone. While there may be up to an inch of new snow near Paulina Peak, this is not enough new snow to warrant a "direct action" avalanche problem (ie wind slab or storm slab). In the Newberry zone, we have been monitoring the 12/7 rain crust that has resulted in a deep persistent slab problem in the Central Cascades. While this layer has shown weaker characterisitics at Paulina Peak, results from recent stability tests do not indicate a deep slab problem. That being said, these problems are notoriously challenging to assess, and during this time extra caution is warranted for all of Central Oregon's avalanche terrain.
