Avalanche Activity

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on extremely steep shady slopes.

The snowpack is largely stable. The backcountry touring conditions are mostly favourable. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in isolated cases in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. This applies even in case of a single winter sport participant. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised in particular in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of mild temperatures and solar radiation the snowpack consolidated. In all regions only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. On south and southwest facing slopes below approximately 2000 m hardly any snow is lying. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. Sunny slopes low altitudes: The snowpack is well consolidated and its surface has a melt-freeze crust. In shady places that are protected from the wind: Towards its surface, the snowpack is soft and has a loosely bonded surface. Hard wind slabs are to be found especially above the tree line.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist. Low, level 1.
