A windy storm system may create an avalanche hazard in the new snow Monday. Identify areas where the wind drifts the snow into deeper and slightly firmer slabs. Steer around any steep slope where you suspect the wind deposited snow.

You could see as much as 4-6 inches of new snow in the Olympics by mid-day Monday. However, the very strong SW winds should really grab your attention with this storm. Expect the greatest avalanche hazard to exist in locations where the wind drifts the snow into deeper deposits. With such strong winds, you could see erratic wind-loading patterns. Slabs may develop well below the ridgeline, along the sides of gullies, and on any exposed feature. If you suspect the wind loaded snow onto a slope, go around it. Assessing wind slabs can be tricky business and they may react differently from feature to feature. 

The snowpack should handle this modest new snow load with ease. As a result, we expect any avalanche activity to occur within the most recent snow. Several layers may still exist in the upper snowpack from the prolonged holiday storm cycle and small recent storms. One observation from Mt Ellinor highlights one of these potential layers. In most locations, these weaknesses gained strength over the past few days and don’t pose a general threat. 

At lower elevations, you could experience rain. If you find yourself below the rain-snow line, watch for new rollerballs that indicate the snow surface is becoming wet and unstable. 

Expect conditions to change rapidly as we head into the outlook period. Warm and wet weather will significantly increase avalanche risk in the Olympics. 

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.   

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
