Points saillants

A strong storm will approach the Mt Hood area Saturday night.  Winds will ramp up in advance during the day and easily transport recent snow above treeline.  At lower and mid elevations, light rain will increase the chance for wet snow avalanches.

    Strong to extreme winds will likely transport recent snow onto a variety of aspects Saturday above treeline and potentially further downslope than usual.  While ongoing wind transport should give you clues to which slopes are being loaded,  you may not see obvious red flags like shooting cracks or new avalanches if you travel into wind-affected terrain.  Spend time evaluating your options before committing to a large open slope with wind-pressed snow.

    Rain may develop at lower and mid elevations Saturday, increasing the chances for wet loose avalanches.  Given that many areas have a thin freezing rain crust from Thursday and recent snow has had time to settle, any wet loose avalanches that do occur should be small.  Avalanches could become large In isolated areas and extreme terrain where wet loose avalanches gouge down to older snow.  If you start to sink into wet snow deeper than your ankles or see natural wet loose avalanches occur,  take nature's cue and move to lower angle terrain.  The same elevations where you're most likely to see wet loose avalanches are the same places where snow cover is thinnest; think about what happens if you get knocked off your feet near a terrain trap like an open creek.  

    Small wet loose avalanches like the ones in this photo can grow larger in areas where temperatures warm and there's more cold snow to entrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Near treeline, forecasters found a generally right-side up snowpack over 3+ (1m) deep on easterly aspects Friday.  There were not specific layers of concern heading into this weekend's storm cycle.  They noted ongoing wind transport higher on the mountain and a thin crust on the snow surface that capped 8-10" of snow from midweek.  While all elevations are looking much healthier snow depth-wise after a rough start to the winter season, creeks are definitely still open and present travel challenges.  Take some extra time to buffer for early season obstacles when planning your day out.
