Avalanche Activity

GC 09/03 Unstable windslab, sheltered locations on NW through NE to SE aspects above 800m. Fragile Cornices! AV. Hazard Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: New snow and South to West-South-Westerly winds will form unstable windslab as the day progresses in wind sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations will form in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North-West through North to South-Easterly aspect mainly above 800 metres. Cornices above these aspects will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow will affect the area overnight and through the day. Southerly gales overnight and in the morning will veer West-South-Westerly becoming fresh by the end of the day. The freezing level will initially be around 1000 metres briefly rising above the summits then lowering to 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Cold conditions overnight with a light trace of new snow at the highest levels. South-South-Easterly winds have strengthened to gale force through the day. There have been frequent sunny spells. The freezing level is around 800 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The general snowpack is well bonded and stable. Firm and icy conditions exist on all aspects above 650 metres. Isolated pockets of shallow windslab have formed in some gully exits. Surface instabilities exist on slopes affected by solar radiation. These areas are generally avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
