Avalanche Activity

GC16/2 New snow variable Southerly winds unstable windslab summit gullies+N-SE slopes 850m+ cornices fragile. hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Slopes exposed to the recent strong winds will generally be scoured with good stability. Variable winds and new snow will continue to form areas of windslab in wind sheltered locations. Areas most affected will be summit gullies and steep slopes mainly above 850 metres with a Northerly to South-Easterly aspect. Stability will be poor where these windslab accumulations achieve depth. Fresh cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers will continue to affect the higher slopes overnight becoming dry by morning. More persistent snow is expected through the day but there is an element of doubt regarding the timing. Winds overnight will be strong to gale force, generally South-Easterly becoming fresh South-Westerly through the day. The freezing level through the day will be around 900 metres to 1000 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Blustery conditions with occasional clear spells. There have been snow showers on a strong mainly Westerly airflow. The freezing level is around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Windward slopes are generally scoured with good stability. Moderate to weakly bonded windslab exists in sheltered locations mainly above 850 metres. Areas most affected are wind sheltered summit gullies and steep slopes with a North through East to South-East aspect. Fresh cornices are fragile. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
