Avalanche Summary

You can trigger avalanches that break 1 to 3 feet deep on wind-drifted slopes. Pay attention to warning signs such as recent avalanches, shooting cracks, and sounds of the snowpack collapsing. Avalanches that break on this more shallowly buried weak layer can step down to deeper weak layers in the snowpack and become more destructive. There is no way to tell if this will happen; avoiding recently drifted slopes will greatly reduce your risk of avalanches.
