Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a dangerous avalanche that breaks on weak layers buried in the snowpack. The most dangerous slopes will be those where new wind-drifted snow contributes to the overloading of these layers. Shooting cracks in the new snow are a sign you should move to lower-angle terrain, but you will not likely see signs of instability before triggering a deeper and larger avalanche. On slopes with deeply buried weak layers, sticking to wind-sheltered terrain less than about 30 degrees will increase your safety.
