Avalanche Summary

The avalanche conditions are generally safe throughout the Grand Mesa. You may encounter unstable snow on wind-loaded slopes below cornices on northerly and easterly-facing slopes where you can trigger a small avalanche in the new snow. By avoiding these terrain features and other terrain traps such as a creek or a lake below a steep slope, you can reduce your chances of even a small avalanche injuring or burying you. Even though generally safe avalanche conditions exist you should always practice safe travel techniques including carrying a beacon, shovel, and probe when traveling in or near avalanche terrain and exposing one person to a steep slope at a time.
