Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a dangerous avalanche that breaks one to three feet deep in the new snow. On wind-loaded slopes on the lee side of a ridgeline or below cornices avalanches will be easier to trigger and they can easily grow large enough to bury you. Avoid traveling on or underneath slopes steeper than around 35 degrees at higher elevations and give cornices and the edges of ridgelines a wide berth.

You might be able to trigger a large and destructive avalanche that breaks on weak snow near the ground. The weak snow is buried around six to nine feet deep on most slopes. By avoiding shallow areas such as a rock outcrop, slopes that previously avalanched this season, and uneven, rocky slopes, you can reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche that entrains the entire season's snowpack.
