Avalanche Activity

LO for 16/01. Cold and Dry. Unstable windslab remaining on N, E to SE aspects above 900m. Unstable cornices. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The cold conditions will maintain instabilities and so little change is expected in the snowpack. Deposits of windslab of varying degrees of stability, some of it poorly bonded, will remain in wind-sheltered locations such as gullies and coire rims on many aspects above 900 metres. Most affected will be North through East to South-East aspects. Some substantial fragile cornices will exist above these aspects. Below 900 metres stability will be better. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be cold and generally dry. Temperatures will be below freezing at all but the lowest levels. Moderate winds will be from the West. Observed Weather Influences: It was cold and generally dry day. The freezing level was around 500 metres. Moderate winds were from the West. ObservedSnowStability: Significant accumulations of windslab of varying levels of stability have been deposited over the last few days. The most recent deposits tend to be the softest and least well bonded. Although many aspects are affected, the greatest accumulations tend to be on North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Some significant fragile cornices were noted mainly on the aspects mentioned above. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
