Avalanche Activity

TO for 20.01. Unstable windslab mainly on NE thru E to SE aspects. Later windslab instability on SW to N aspects. Haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: At first the snowpack will continue to thaw and become moist at lower levels, firming later as the freezing level lowers. At higher elevations there will be some drifting, building poorly bonded windslab mainly onto North-East, East to South aspects above 750 metres, affecting coire rims, convex slopes, gullies and scarp slopes. Cornices will remain fragile on these aspects. Later windslab will begin to form on South-West to North aspects above 750m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very strong North-West winds will weaken to light and veer through North to North-East becoming moderate South-South-East by the end of the period. Light snow showers will die out and then it will remain dry. The freezing level will rise to 700 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Winds have been gale force North-Westerly. There were frequent snow showers falling as sleet and rain at lower levels. The freezing level was around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snow pack was beginning to thaw and soften at lower levels. Fresh unstable windslab has continued to accumulate at higher elevations. These instabilities are mainly affecting North-East through East to South aspects above 750 metres where the fresh windslab has added additional loading to the older poorly bonded unstable snowpack. Localised instabilities are present at lower levels. Cornices are increasingly fragile on the same aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
