Points saillants

 Wind slab avalanches are possible in leeward catchment zones and below ridgelines.  Sluff management in steep exposed terrain should also be considered when traveling. When in doubt, keep terrain choices simple and margins wide.

    Wind blown snow in catchment areas, gullys, below ridgelines has formed slabs of more dense over less dense snow. In some areas a combination of sugary faceted snow and crusts are underneath these more dense slabs.  Snow surface cracks and hollow sounding snow are signs of wind slab. Also look for textured surfaces on leeward slopes below or adjacent to ridgelines.  Avoid wind slabs in steep terrain and above terrain traps.

    In cold north facing zones protected from wind. Snow surfaces have not bonded yet and could pose a hazard in steep terrain.  Sluff management is key, to keep from losing control and being pushed into areas we don't intend.  Dont let sluff build up above you in consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

  • New snow depths range from 4"-12" depending on aspect and elevation. Underneath the new snow is variable conditions from old refaceted grains varying in size, to multiple crust layers and combinations of both.  Be cautious and stick to simple terrain if unsure.
  • South facing exposed slopes could have formed a slight surface crust overnight depending on sun exposure yesterday.  
  • Reminder the new snow is just enough to cover "sharks" rocks and stumps and branches, that were exposed over the month long no snow period. So travel smart and ski/sled light!
