Avalanche Summary

You can easily trigger an avalanche large enough to bury you on most steep slopes. You can trigger them from flat or low-angle meadows below a steep slope or long distances away so be aware of steep slopes above you and other parties nearby. Some of these avalanches can break into lower-angle slopes around the edges of a steep slope. If you are traveling in or near avalanche terrain give most steep slopes facing west through north to southeast a wide margin. Wind-sheltered, south and southwest-facing slopes offer safer travel options. You can always reduce your chances of being caught in an avalanche by sticking to slopes less than about 30 degrees without similarly steep slopes above you.
