Points saillants

Gale-force winds, feet of new snow, and rapid snow loading will create very dangerous avalanche conditions today. Large natural and human-triggered avalanches are likely in exposed and sheltered terrain. Avoid traveling on, below, or even near any slopes steep enough to avalanche.

    New snow and wind last night have already formed fragile wind slabs on the leeward side of ridges, in gullies, and on open slopes exposed to the wind. In the northern part of the forecast area where more snow fell last night, these wind slabs may already be large. In the southern part of the forecast area where less snow fell, they may start out smaller this morning. Blizzard conditions today with gale force SW winds and feet of new snow across the entire region will cause these slabs of wind drifted snow to become larger, more widespread, and more unstable. Natural avalanches are likely today and human-triggered wind slab avalanches will become very likely. Large and destructive avalanches could occur today. The largest wind slabs will exist in near and above treeline terrain on NW-N-NE-E-SE aspects. Some large wind slab avalanches could run down into below treeline terrain.

    Dangerous conditions will exist in the backcountry today. Traveling in, below, or near avalanche terrain is not recommended. The blizzard conditions will also result in poor visibility and make navigation more difficult.

    Unstable slabs of storm snow will likely form during this storm due to the intense snowfall rates and rapid snow loading. These storm slabs could exist on any steep slopes in wind-protected areas near and below treeline. Human-triggered storm slab avalanches large enough to bury or injure a person will become likely today. Storm slabs can exist on slopes in tree-covered areas typically thought of as safe. If the openings in the trees are large enough to easily travel through and steep enough to avalanche, then they can produce storm slab avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Observers reported blowing snow and some stubborn wind slabs along ridges yesterday. 
  • Snow coverage has improved greatly since April 10th. Many NW-N-NE-E aspects have good snow coverage. Snow cover on most SE-S-SW-W aspects is limited to the snow that has fallen since April 10. Prior to this recent snow, most of those aspects had large areas of bare ground on them.
