Points saillants

Avoid areas where the wind has stiffened the snowpack today or where new snow is building fresh drifts. Triggering an avalanche 1-2' thick is most likely on slopes with wind drifting but could occur in wind-sheltered terrain, particularly south aspects. Assess the snowpack you are moving in, particularly if riding on upper elevations. Continual snowpack and terrain assessment will decrease your exposure to hazards. Avoid steep areas if cracking or collapsing occurs.

    Triggering soft slabs that are failing on weak layers in sheltered terrain is less likely today, but can't be ruled out entirely. New snow today will fall on different snow surfaces from the previous several days of trickling snowfall, which may not bond well and be sensitive to your weight.  Assess the snow you are riding on and the terrain you are attached to, both above and below.  Avoid steeper areas if cracking or collapsing occurs.

Avalanche Discussion

The current snowpack and weather have been playing an interesting game of chess up until the incoming storm starting on Thursday. Though we've seen some natural activity over the past few days both in the Tetons and Togwotee, a larger cycle has yet to occur despite the snowpack structure having clear points of weakness. Weak snow interfaces exist across the southern and northern ranges, primarily after the mid-November dry spell. This especially holds true for Togwotee, which has a shallower snowpack and overall weaker snowpack structure. With a significant storm adding a large amount of weight more rapidly, this will tip the scales towards a larger natural avalanche cycle and an increase in sensitivity of the snowpack to a skier or rider over the weekend. 

On shaded slopes, you'll find weak facets underneath the newest snowfall. As you move to warmer, sunnier slopes you'll find a mix of crusts+facets, with stout crusts on due south slopes that get the warmest. These crust+facet combinations have been of particular note with recent avalanche activity adjacent to Targhee and in the Tetons. All in all, any of these surfaces can make for a reactive weak layer.  Most areas appear to be missing a strong enough slab, which is why wind-drifted snow and areas where the wind has transported greater quantities of snow are of note today.
