Points saillants

Triggering avalanches in wind deposited snow near and above treeline will be possible on all aspects. Evaluate wind loaded slopes and when in doubt, stick to slopes less than 30 degrees steep. Wet snow avalanches will be possible at all elevations, especially on slopes in the direct sun as the surface snow becomes wet and slushy.

    The predominantly east winds have continued to move a lot of snow. At times on Friday, the wind seemed to be coming from multiple directions at once causing a flurry of snow at ridge tops and peaks. There have not been any reports of recent wind slab avalanches but this is a good time to be vigilant and evaluate slopes near and above treeline for wind slabs.

    Most wind slab avalanches will be small, however isolated terrain features may catch enough blowing snow to produce large avalanches.

    Be cautious in steep, and unsupported terrain where avalanches are more likely to be triggered. Utilize snowpack testing such as hand sheer tests. Look for signs of cracking in the slab on small safe test slopes, as an inidicator that wind slab avalanches can happen.

    Wind slabs formed earlier in the week are now non reactive.

    With a solid refreeze overnight, it will take some time for the snow surface to warm up. The east winds have been keeping the surface cool at mid and upper elevations. Wet loose activity has been minimal at these elevations, but continue to watch for the signs of this problem. Small avalanches in steep terrain, can cause you to loose your footing. This can lead to big consequences in sustained steep terrain and above cliffs and other terrain traps. Watch for signs like roller balls and the snow surface becoming wet and slushy (to ankle deep or more) as an indicator that wet loose avalanches are possible. Wet loose avalanches will be more of a problem in steeper terrain and on slopes in the direct sun. Use timing and aspect to reduce your exposure to wet avalanches.....i.e. move to slopes that are not in the direct sun. The lower elevations will be warmer and wet loose avalanches may be more widespread.

Continue to be cautious of cornices at ridge tops. If you can't see over a ridge, get a better vantage point to see if a cornice is lurking there. Avoid stepping out onto cornices; they can break off under the weight of a person and send you tumbling down the slope below.
