Points saillants

The avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on the upper elevation north through southeast facing slopes due to recent wind loading of snow.

Strong wind has transported and deposited snow into drifts and slabs. Some of these will be sensitive to the weight of a person.

In areas where the wind hasn't transported and deposited snow, the avalanche danger is MODERATE.

    The wind drifting and depositing snow into slabs is making the buried Persistent Weak Layer more sensitive. Anywhere there is a fresh drift or slab is where you're likely to trigger an avalanche today. The most likely locations are in the upper elevations on slopes that face north through southeast. Keep in mind that the wind can deposit snow in erratic locations so watch for drifts wherever you're traveling today and avoid them.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Strong northwest wind over the last 24 hours is today's headline. There were gusts over 70mph on the highest most exposed terrain. The wind was also getting down into the canyons and drainages and stirring up the snow. This will put an end to the powder party we've been having. You'll find quite variable surface snow conditions out there today. Temperatures were in the mid 20s on Wednesday and were in the upper teens overnight. A couple of inches of snow did accumulate from this storm on the northern end of the Skyline.

Mountain Weather: The wind will gradually slow during the day today. Temperatures look like they'll stay in the teens. We should see some sun. Another quick hitting storm moves through tonight that might bring another trace to a few inches of snow. I continue to watch an interesting weather pattern develop for next week. Models are hinting at quite a bit of water coming our way starting around the 28th/29th. This is still quite a way out and things can change and often do but it looks pretty impressive as of now.
