New snow over the last 5 days or so has added some stress to the surface hoar that got buried on Valentine's Day. This weak layer is now between 1 to 2' deep in Summit Lake. This layer has proven to be difficult to assess and produced unreliable test results making it difficult to trust in Turnagain Pass. If you are getting out on steeper terrain choose smaller slopes without terrain traps below like gullies and creeks. Or we can avoid this entirely by sticking to low angle slopes.
Storm totals below are from 12 AM Friday morning through 6 am this morning:
- Portage: 11.4" Snow Water Equivalent (SWE), equaling 6 to 9' snow above treeline.
- Girdwood: 5.2" SWE equaling 3' snow.
- Turnagain Pass: 3.2" SWE equaling 12-30" snow.
- Summit Lake: 0.9" SWE equaling 6-8" snow.
- Seward/Lost Lake: 2.9" SWE equaling 16-24" snow.
