Recent Avalanches: There was an avalanche fatality on Friday outside of our forecast area, near Lake George. We will share more information on this accident as it becomes available. Within our forecast zone, a group remotely triggered a small avalanche in the Squirrel Flats area in the Placer River Valley on Wednesday. There was a widespread human-triggered avalanche cycle last weekend, with multiple remote triggers and at least two people getting caught, carried, and buried. We suspect all of these failed on a weak layer of snow buried by the storm that impacted our area on 3/19. Check out our Observations page for details.
We are in a period of status quo with the two buried layers of weak, faceted snow in the upper 2' of the snowpack. These layers are becoming more stubborn as we get further from the last loading event, but the snowpack is still capable of producing avalanches. If you are trying to get into steep terrain, it will be important to carefully assess the snowpack and be prepared to change your plans if you notice any indicators of unstable snow — including shooting cracks, collapsing, unstable test results, or fresh avalanche activity.
Be aware that stubborn persistent problems like these will not always give you clear feedback even when conditions are unstable. One way to mitigate this uncertainty is to simply avoid traveling in steep terrain. If you are using steep terrain, you can still reduce your exposure by avoiding slopes with terrain traps like trees, rocks, cliffs, or gullies, and by practicing safe travel habits.
Loose Snow Avalanches remain likely in steep terrain. These will be easy for a person to trigger, and can be a concern in consequential terrain. With partly cloudy skies expected today, it is unlikely we will see significant natural activity.

Small avalanches like these ones in the Lynx Creek drainage can still have serious consequences in big terrain. These most likely occurred a week ago, but this is the type of avalanche that could still happen today.
