Points saillants

Temperatures have cooled and we are seeing less reactivity within the snowpack. Watch for windslabs at treeline and above as well as frozen tree bombs at lower elevations.

Problèmes avalancheux

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Possible - Likely
    Taille
    1–2.5

Recent strong winds have built stiff windslabs at treeline and above.

  • Deep Persistent Slabs

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Unlikely - Possible
    Taille
    2–3.5

Thin areas are locations where it is more likely to trigger this weakness.

Confidence

High

  • The number, quality, or consistency of field observations is good, and supports our confidence.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche activity was observed.

Snowpack Summary

A thin melt freeze crust was being encountered on all aspects up to 2300m and likely higher and thicker on more solar aspects. Windslabs are common at treeline and above from the strong winds over this past week with some areas stripped down to rock.

The November crust is deeply buried in the snowpack down 120-200cm. Field tests on this layer over the past few days have produced no results from a deep tap test on this layer. There is still some concern for triggering this layer from thin snowpack areas.

Weather Summary

Cooler temperatures overnight are forecast with a low of -14C. Day time highs will climb to 5C and winds will be out NE in the moderate range. No new precip is forecast over the next few days.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid steep terrain, including convex rolls, or areas with a thin, rocky, or variable snowpack.
  • Be careful as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Watch for areas of hard wind slab on alpine features.
