Avalanche Activity

Watch for wet snow in the afternoon on sunlit orientations and weak layers on northerly orientations.

Moderate avalanche danger (2nd degree) is valid in the High and West and western part of the Low Tatras from noon. Typical spring situation prevails. The snow will harden at night and melt during the day. The main avalanche problem is therefore wet snow on sunny slopes. During the day we expect partly cloudy weather and so the melting will not be as significant as in the previous days. On the north side of the highest altitudes there is still a consistently weak layer in the snow profile. The current avalanche situation on the ground is recognizable - watch for a larger layer of melted snow, but also avoid areas where blown snow from the last snowfall is evident and did not fall with the avalanche in previous days.

Snowpack Structure

The weather during Wednesday will still be influenced by high pressure, but we expect increasing clouds. It will continue to be very warm, with temperatures reaching positive numbers below 2000 m a.s.l. The snow will harden overnight and then soften again during the day. However, the softening due to sunshine will not be as pronounced as on previous days due to cloud and wind. On the northern side of the mountains, in the case of shaded areas, the snow still retains its powdery character. At the highest points (above 2000 m), there is a permanently weak layer of square-grained snow on the northern side of the mountains. The snow cover is well below average, especially at altitudes below 1500 m.
