Avalanche Activity

Along the border with France, along the border with Switzerland and in high Alpine regions the avalanche danger is one level higher. There is a danger of falling on the hard crust.

In the last few days sometimes deep wind slabs formed in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain as well as at high altitude. As a consequence of new snow and wind they will increase in size additionally as the day progresses. These can be released, even by a single winter sport participant, especially on very steep slopes. (--), caution is to be exercised in particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation loose snow avalanches are possible, but they can reach medium size in isolated cases, in particular on extremely steep slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 20 to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday, in particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland. Monday: In some localities 5 to 20 cm of snow, but less in some localities, will fall until the evening above approximately 2000 m. As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase on Monday. The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a strong melt-freeze crust. The sometimes strong wind will transport the new snow. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes there is still a very large amount of snow.

Tendency

The snowpack remains prone to triggering in some places. Some small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized avalanches are further possible.
