A nasty couple of days are forecast in the Hutt Range. Avoid ridegline travel during periods of gale force winds.

    Loose Wet avalanches will be possible across all elevations and aspects. Be wary of the FAFL continuing to rise and any rainfall Monday evening. Avoid steep rocky terrain where possible and be wary of overhead terrain if travelling through low elevation bands.

  • Wind Slabs

    Stubborn Wind Slabs will build across the SE 1/4. These slabs will likely deposit rapidly and could be between 10-30cm deep. Look to avoid where possible or use spacing to mitigate this problem.

Recent Avalanche Activity

There has been no avalanche activity reported in the past 48 hours.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Great coverage at present in the Hutt Range. There are multiple changes in layering throughout the recent snow with numerous rime crusts and density changes. Isolated deposits of wind blown snow up to 30cm deep have been observed in most terrain features lee to the SW. The snowpack below 1800m, on all aspects, has seen some warming and has settled well.

Mountain Weather

Severe gale NW winds are forecast for the next 48 hours. FAFL up to 2800m Monday afternoon & back down to 2400m Tuesday. Up to 10mm of rain is forecast for Monday evening.
