Points saillants

LOW avalanche danger exists at all elevations. Sunny skies will be tempered by an increase in mid-slope winds today keeping minor Loose Wet concerns confined to lower elevation steep protected southerly (SE-S-SW) facing terrain.

Fully sunny skies will cause lower elevation southerly facing terrain that is protected from wind to become wet and potentially unsupportable. SE-S-SW facing slopes will become concerning as they warm thru the day, especially near heat-sinks like rocks bands.  If you are sinking into wet-manky snow, recognize the potential of triggering loose-wet sloughs that could take you off your feet especially in steep confined terrain. W to NW breeze at mid-elevations should keep higher slopes cooler and less concerning.

Avalanche Discussion

Firm and variable conditions abound. Frozen slopes and firm windboards make crampons and a whippet or ice ax important tools to consider for travel in steeper terrain.  Cold clear nights have been improving conditions in lower elevation northerly facing sheltered terrain where soft snow can still be found.

RECENT OBSERVATIONS

Partly cloudy skies yesterday kept southerly facing slopes from softening excessively, even at lower elevations. These clouds combined with high elevation winds kept higher elevation slopes quite firm.

-2/23 – Mammoth: Warming of Southerly aspects.

-2/22 – Bishop – Basin Mtn: Warming SE aspects, small loose wet sloughs below 10,000’.

-2/22 – Lundy Canyon – South slopes on Black Mountain: Moist snow

-2/22 – Mammoth Mtn: Timing of warming southerly slopes.
