Points saillants

Very dangerous conditions will develop as a large storm impacts the area Wednesday night and Thursday. Snowfall will be intense and natural and human triggered avalanches will be very likely on many steep slopes.

Avoid areas where avalanches may start, run and stop.

    The West Central picked up several feet of new snow in the recent storm and weather models are predicting an additional 4 inches of SWE, or more than 3 feet of new snow by tomorrow night. This is an incredible load over a very short period of time. If these water amounts materialize the snowpack will not be able to adjust and we will have a widespread avalanche cycle.  

    Avoid avalanche terrain on Thursday. 

    Observers triggered several small, 8-12" deep soft slabs on Tuesday. They also found evidence of older and larger avalanches (size ~D2.5, slab depth 2+ feet) which probably occured naturally on January 2 nd or 3rd. Expect avalanches on both the shallow and deeper layers if the storm totals verify.

    This natural avalanche occurred on a N/NE face @~4500 feet in elevation. It is 2+ feet deep, ~D2.5, and probably occurred early in the morning on January 3.
