Points saillants

The clearly visible wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads, in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 1800 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise.

  • Persistent weak layers

    • 1,000 m–1,600 m

Avalanche Activity

The clearly visible wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads, in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 1800 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise.

At high altitude and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs of recent weeks are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust.
