Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a sometimes storm force wind from northerly directions, wind slabs formed in the last few days in all aspects. They are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular at the base of rock walls, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. Avalanches can be triggered in the old snowpack reach large size in particular on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes.

Snowpack Structure

The small quantity of fresh snow and in particular the wind slabs formed by the strong wind are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. Avalanches can in some places be released in deep layers in particular on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes.
