Buried weak layers in our snowpack are still creating a concern for triggering large to very large avalanches. Our last storm dropped 8 to12 inches of low-density snow that didn't appear to be enough to upset those weak layers as we weren't able to experience collapsing or whumpfs. This was a surprising observation or lack thereof. The bottom line is I still don't trust it. Over the next 48 hrs, we'll be adding more snow and more weight to a fragile snowpack and we should all have our feelers out looking for red flags.
Our overall snowpack depth is all over the place. The areas to be aware of are areas where the snowpack is thinnest. We're talking about near and below treeline and previous slopes that have avalanched. Shallower snowpacks will harbor more advanced facets and will be easier to trigger as a skier or rider. Areas of deeper snowpacks will be a bit more stubborn but if triggered will produce a very large unsurvivable avalanche.
As always during times of uncertainty and high consequence, we can limit our exposure with our terrain selection. Sticking to terrain no greater than 30 degrees and staying out from underneath large open terrain will help mitigate your exposure to increasing the avalanche danger.
Multiple faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack, with some closer to the surface. The weak faceted snow closer to the ground continues to remain a concern.
