HIGH: You should avoid travel in avalanche terrain today due to very dangerous avalanche conditions in the backcountry. Significant accumulations of heavy snow and drifting from continued very strong and sustained southwest and south winds will cause avalanches to be likely at upper and mid elevations. Soaking rain and warm temperatures are causing natural wet snow avalanches down lower. Slopes with buried persistent weak layers are being overloaded, increasing the chances for dangerous deep hard slab avalanches.

  • Avoid and stay well clear of obvious or historic avalanche paths and run-out zones.
  • Stay off and out from under steep slopes with wind drifted or rain-saturated snow.

    The danger of avalanches caused by wind drifted snow continues to increase today. Very dangerous conditions already exist on some upper elevation slopes and drifting from continued strong southwest winds along with with heavy snowfall will cause the danger to rise and become more widespread. Natural and human triggered avalanches, 2 to 3 feet deep, will be likely today on drifted upper and mid elevation slopes.

    Rain below about 7500' saturated the snow and created dangerous wet snow avalanche conditions on steep slopes. Natural and triggered loose wet avalanches are likely, and possible on low elevation slopes where they could endanger unsuspecting people. Avoid being on or under steep slopes with saturated snow.

    The new snow is not bonding well to last week's weak surface snow and 2-foot-deep soft slab avalanches consisting of heavy new snow are likely even in sheltered terrain. Frost or feathery surface hoar and thick and thinner layers of small-grained near surface facets plagued the snow surface on many slopes before the storm.

    The storm is adding weight to slopes with poor snow structure and increasing the danger of avalanches failing on a persistent weak layer. In some areas, buried layers of sugary faceted snow may be reactivated. Dangerous hard slab avalanches are becoming more possible for people to trigger, especially on very steep drifted rocky slopes with shallow cover and poor snow structure.

    Weak surface snow plagues the Logan Zone currently, and we are set up for an active period as a warm, wet, and windy storm bares down on us this weekend.

    Chains of well developed, loose faceted snow. Weak sugary snow like this is widespread in the Logan Zone in places where the snow is less than about a meter deep.

Recent Activity

Natural wet avalanches were reported yesterday at lower elevations in the Logan and Blachsmith Fork Canyon.

There were a few close calls in the Provo and Salt Lake Area Mountains Saturday, involving loose wet avalanches. Reports are on our avalanche page... HERE

There were numerous close calls and lucky outcomes across Utah in January, including several in the Logan Zone. Sadly, we have two recent fatalities to report, both from the Manti La Sal National Forest.

-A snowmobile rider was killed in the La Sal Mountains near Moab on 1/25/18. report is HERE

Snow and Weather

The Tony Grove Snotel at 8400' reports about 15 inches of heavy snow in the last 24 hours, with 1.4" SWE. It's 27º F this morning and there's 68" of total snow containing 92% of average SWE for the date. It's 22º F, at the 9700' CSI Logan Peak weather station. South winds increased again early this morning, and are currently averaging around 45 mph, with an earlier gust of 67 mph.

A relatively mild southwesterly flow will prevail across the region through tonight. A couple of weak weather systems embedded within this flow will pass through the area during this time. A stronger and colder storm system will impact the region Tuesday into Wednesday, with high pressure following late in the week. Today in the Logan Zone, it'll snow in the mountains, with 4 to 8 inches of accumulation possible. Temperatures at 8500' expected to drop to around 26º F, and southwest winds will blow 30 to 35 mph with 50 mph gusts. Tonight, we'll see more heavy snow and continuing southwest wind. Temperatures will rise to around 27º F, and 30 to 35 mph southwest winds are expected to continue. 3 to 7 inches of accumulation is forecast. Snow and winds will continue tomorrow, with 6 to 10 inches possible, temperatures around 33º F, and 32 to 36 mph south-southwest wind, gusting to around 50 mph.
