Avalanche Activity

GC17/2New snow Westerly gales, old snow re-frozen unstable windslab mainly N-SE aspects850m+ cornices fragile hazard Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: Colder conditions will start to re-freeze the existing snowpack. Westerly winds and new snow will form areas of windslab in wind sheltered locations. Areas most affected will be summit gullies and steep slopes mainly above 850 metres with a Northerly through East to South-Easterly aspect. Stability will be poor where these windslab accumulations achieve depth. Cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Colder conditions with new snow overnight becoming showery through the day. A strong to gale force Westerly airflow will affect the area (Storm Dudley). The freezing level overnight will be around 700 metres lowering to 500 metres through the day. Observed Weather Influences: Windy and damp conditions today with sleet and snow on the highest slopes. The freezing level was around the highest summits. ObservedSnowStability: Much of the snowpack has become soft and moist with some losses at lower levels. Wet snow instabilities exist in sheltered gullies and on steep scarp slopes with a mainly Northerly through East to South-Easterly aspect above 900 metres. Cornice debris noted from a North-Easterly aspect. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
