You are most likely to encounter a wind slab above treeline where winds have been strong enough to transport lower density snow. Winds have been decreasing throughout the storm cycle, so slabs may be hidden by unconsolidated snow in some areas and there may be fresh slabs in others. Mt. Hood Pro Patrol reported that wind slabs were reactive to artillery trigger, with some pockets as deep as 1 ft. Wind slabs may be more sensitive where overlying weak faceted snow. Feeling for firm or hollow sounding snow is a sign that wind slabs may be present. You can stay safe by traveling on ridges, wind-scoured areas and slopes less than 35 degrees.
In areas that receive heavier snow squalls on Friday evening, storm slabs may develop overnight, so watch for cracking under your skis as a sign that you should avoid all open or unsupported slopes greater than 35 degrees.
