Avalanche Activity

GC13/3 Snow+strong NEwinds old snow firm+icy unstable windslab sheltered gullies+SW-NW slopes900m+fragile cornices Haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: A return to cooler conditions by morning will start to firm up the existing snowpack improving general stability. New snow and a strong North-Easterly winds will form accumulations of unstable windslab in wind sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations will mainly be in summit gullies and on slopes with a South-West to North-Westerly aspect above 900 metres. Fragile cornices may exist above these areas. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Mild conditions with rain or sleet will continue for much of the night. A return to colder conditions by morning will give new snow to lower levels as the day progresses. Winds through the day will be strong generally North-Easterly. The freezing level by morning will be around 800 metres lowering to 200 metres by evening. Observed Weather Influences: New snow overnight turned to sleet and rain today as the freezing level rose above the summits, winds have been fresh to strong generally Southerly. ObservedSnowStability: Milder and wet conditions today have softened and moistened the snowpack at all levels. The old snowpack is generally moist but stable. Wet snow instabilities exist in sheltered locations where windslab formed overnight. Areas most affected are summit gullies and on steep scarp slopes with a North-West through North to North-East aspect mainly above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
