Points saillants

Wind slab avalanches will be possible today and reactive to human triggers. Look out for new snow that has been drifted onto the leeward side of ridgelines. You can reduce your exposure by seeking lower-angled and sheltered terrain. A stronger storm will impact the area tonight, and you can expect deteriorating weather and elevated avalanche hazard.

    Up to 4 inches of new snow and strong-to-extreme southwest winds will create fresh wind slabs today. Expect to find this problem near and above tree line on downwind slopes and favored terrain features like gullies and rollovers. Wind slabs will be mostly thin and small. Mammoth and areas north recorded the most snow, and you can anticipate the largest slabs here and near the Sierra Crest. New snow has fallen on top of firm, frozen surfaces, and wind slabs may be reactive to human triggers.

    Look for recent avalanches, blowing snow, and cracking in fresh drifts as indicators that the problem exists where you are. You can reduce your exposure by seeking out lower-angle slopes and terrain sheltered from the wind.

Avalanche Discussion

The forecast area received up to 4 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. As is often the case, most of this snow fell in the Mammoth area, and areas to the north, with Bishop stations reporting around 1 inch. If your plan takes you up near the Sierra Crest, you may find more snow there as well. Southwest winds have been strong all night, and are forecasted to continue. New snow and wind will create fresh wind slabs today. The snow surface before this storm was firm and frozen, and in many places, ball-bearing-like graupel snow fell on the interface. These two factors may work together to increase the sensitivity of avalanches today.

Expect surface conditions to be variable, and to find both firm and frozen, as well as soft and drifted snow in the same run. Flat light may make it more difficult to identify which is which.

The skiable snowline has continued to climb, and you can expect some dirt or pavement on most approaches region-wide. As new snow continues to fall and blow around, beware of freshly covered obstacles. 

A stronger system is approaching the area, and set to impact the region tonight into tomorrow. Its a good time to pay attention to surfaces and coverage ahead of the new snow, and anticipate elevated avalanche hazard over the next couple of days.
