Points saillants

Overnight, a wholesome little storm brought five to eight inches of snow to the mountains, paired with southerly wind. New snow rests on a variety of snow surfaces. Higher elevations are today's primary focus, where significant new snow and wind could mix up a recipe for natural and/or human triggered avalanches. Watch for wind drifted snow and changing conditions as you gain elevation.

    Wind has blow primarily out of the southeast over the past three days, averaging 6 mi/hr with gusts to 30 mi/hr. Expect wind loaded terrain on northerly facing aspects. East and west facing aspects may also be wind loaded. This avalanche problem will be most prevalent above treeline. Approach avalanche terrain with a curious eye. It's recent large avalanches (like pictured) that should raise an eyebrow and cause one to take caution if venturing into alpine terrain.

    The storm slab avalanche problem is possible anywhere more than six inches of new snow has fallen. Depending on the snow characteristics, slabs could be small and relatively harmless, or larger and more dangerous. Storm slab problems are usually short-lived. To assess potential size, monitor new snow totals and expect deeper accumulations at higher elevations and in leeward terrain. Look for direct feedback like shooting cracks on small, steep test slopes. Reduce your risk by waiting a day or two after a storm before venturing into steep terrain.

    It's unlikely to see wet loose avalanche problems today, but it must be mentioned. The sun is warm this time of the year and if it pops out after a storm, wet loose slides can be a problem.  Learn more about loose wet slides here and keep them in mind as we enter into full Spring mode.

Avalanche Discussion

As with any storm that arrives overnight, we're not 100% certain how things will behave out there today. None-the-less, a healthy dollop of new snow and wind should prompt the assessment mindset if venturing out. Watch for signs of avalanche danger like recent avalanches and use small test slopes to get a feel for how the snow is behaving. With a curious eye, often the snowpack will exhibit signs of unstable snow before you stand atop your shredding slope of choice. We call them the five red flags of avalanche danger. Our last forecast of the season will be on Sunday, April 16th. Don't fret, though. The lights will still be on as we flip the switch to climbing season. Recent climbing observations and our climbing advisory will be the new focus. Spring ski and climbing season is shaping up. I'm not a fortune-teller, but with over 200 inches of snow on the ground at treeline on the mountain, I'm confident in saying, it's going to be good!
