Points saillants

Slab avalanches are becoming increasingly stubborn to triggering but will still be possible on Thursday. Triggering an avalanche will be related to wind deposited snow on lee slopes; primarily on north and east facing terrain near and above treeline. Evaluate slopes for signs of wind loading, especially in steep terrain and if you encounter signs of unstable snow such as cracking or previous avalanches consider sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees steep or slopes that have not been wind loaded.

    On Wednesday, wind slabs were becoming increasingly stubborn to triggering. However, lets keep wind slabs in mind on Thursday. There is still snow available for wind transport and as southwest winds pick up on Thursday we may see new shallow wind slabs build on lee terrain. Triggering a wind slab on Thursday will result in a small avalanche; be aware of terrain traps and steep terrain below you than can increase the consequence of triggering an avalanche. 

    Wind slabs form in specific terrain where wind blown snow accumulates on lee slopes. Wind slabs typically form below ridgetops and around features that collect blowing snow. Identify visual clues such as pillowy deposits or wavy surface texture to indicate where recent wind slabs have formed.

On Wednesday, no avalanches or signs of unstable snow were reported.

Small wet loose avalanches could be possible on Thursday at the lowest elevations in the forecast zone such as Santiam Pass where the daytime high temperature is expected to reach into the mid to upper 40's F. Watch for roller balls and pinwheels as precursors to the wet loose problem. Evaluate how the snow surface is changing; as the snow becomes wet and slushy to a depth of ankle or boot top, expect small wet loose avalanches to become a reality. Wet loose avalanches will be small, however be aware of terrain traps and steep terrain below you at the lowest elevations.  I don't expect wet loose avalanches to come into play in the bulk of the central Cascades zone.
