Points saillants

You may be able to trigger avalanches above treeline in recently drifted snow. Steer around thicker pillows of snow just below ridges. Cooling temperatures should freeze any snow surfaces that were previously moist.

You may still be able to trigger avalanches on leeward sides of the highest ridges where the wind drifted slabs in the past couple of days. Look for signs of recent drifting. Watch for shooting cracks and small test slopes that slide easily. If you see these clues, stick to slopes under 35 degrees and steer around thicker areas of wind-drifted slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

If you're traveling on skis or board, you may still find challenging travel conditions. Make sure to bring appropriate equipment to prevent an uncontrolled fall on slick, frozen surfaces.

On Monday, Matt Primomo and Brooke Mauchund went to the Lichtenberg and Valhalla Lake area. They found some firm and variable travel conditions. On Sunday, observers in the Skyline Lake area found variable conditions and surfaces. On Saturday, observers reported wet loose avalanches in steep terrain near the top of Stevens Pass. Stevens Pass Ski Patrol reported 2 large (D2) natural wet avalanches that ran on Friday in closed terrain on Cowboy Mtn, northerly aspect near treeline.
