Points saillants

Avalanche conditions are mostly stable where the snow surface is firm or icy. In wind-protected areas between 4000 and 5000 feet in elevation, you may find small areas of snow that have become unstable from rain and warm temperatures. Watch out for soft, wet, and saturated snow that is more difficult to walk through. In steep terrain, this is a sign of a potentially hazardous wet slab.

    Small wet slabs of unstable snow could be found in wind-sheltered areas on steep, east-facing slopes where rain and warm temperatures have saturated the snowpack. The areas of most concern will be between 4000 and 5000 feet in elevation in extremely sheltered areas where high winds and new snow had formed wind slabs several days ago. 

    Triggering a wet slab avalanche in these areas is unlikely but not impossible. Wet avalanches are difficult to predict and can be variable by location. It is worth evaluating the snowpack in steep east-facing terrain, especially where the snow becomes soft or very saturated with water. Examples of areas where you might encounter this avalanche problem include the Summer Lion Head Trail and Main Gully in Gulf of Slides

Avalanche Discussion

Over the past 24 hours, conditions have become increasingly warm with water continuing to enter the snowpack through melting from warm temperatures and rainfall.  This process has been happening at all elevations, but expect it to be the most pronounced below 5000 feet in elevation. Continued warm conditions at all elevations will likely contribute to snowpack melting and settling over the next 48 hours. It’s worth paying attention to overhead hazards like falling ice, which is a common occurrence during seasonal warming. Refresh your knowledge about springtime mountain hazards here.

At upper elevations, expect to find a couple inches of new, very wet snow on the ground from accumulations last night. This snow is not expected to contribute to any avalanche problems today, but it will be possible to see some small, loose-wet sluffs on steep terrain at the highest elevations. 

At middle elevations, a combination of mixed precipitation and rain was likely overnight, contributing to the listed avalanche problem above. 

Low elevations saw 100% rain overnight and there might be evidence of lingering ice and snow shedding from steep slopes and cliffs, especially in areas like Crawford Notch.
