Points saillants

Avalanche danger is low on Wednesday, but if you make it to upper elevations, there may be an occasional lingering wind drifted pocket of snow that you could trigger a small avalanche on. Wet avalanche activity that we saw the last two days is likely backing off with slightly cooler temperatures and more cloud cover on Wednesday.

    Small wind slab pockets may exist at upper elevations. In isolated locations, you might be able to trigger an avalanche on one of these stiffer pockets of snow. Any slabs would most likely be found on steep, unsupported slopes.

    Avalanches would likely be small, however, if you're in high consequence terrain the effects of getting caught in an avalanche could be amplified. This would be the case if the slide would bury you deep in a gully, or if you're above a cliff, trees or rocks that would could harm you. South-facing terrain has been impacted by warming the last couple days, so we don't expect slab avalanches to occur there. 

    Example photo: a small slab avalanche like one that you have the smallest chance of finding on Wednesday. It probably wouldn't be a problem, unless it takes you for a ride over a cliff, through rocks or trees, or buries you deep in a gully. 

Avalanche Discussion

I traveled up to 4800' in the West Central zone on Monday. At my 11am departure, I still wasn't seeing any natural wet loose avalanche activity, although I was able to push rollerballs downhill. We suspect there will be less wet loose avalanche activity thanks to slightly cooling temperatures and more cloud cover on Tuesday. That being said, scan your surroundings, especially any steep southerly slopes you might be around, and if you see any natural activity then avoid those steep slopes and terrain right beneath them.

A storm over the weekend started with rain to upper elevations, and then concluded with snow. Around a foot of snow capped the now crusty old snow surface. During my outing, I found good bonding between the crust and the new snow layer. Minor storm instabilities were found midway down the storm snow layer.  You can check out my observation HERE.
