Points saillants

A warm and wet storm will bring new snow and strong winds to above treeline terrain today. Below and near treeline, the precipitation will fall as rain. You could trigger an avalanche in wind-drifted snow above 9,000 feet or within the wet surface snow in the lower elevation bands. If you'll be travelling up high, pay attention to collapsing, shooting cracks, and where wind transported snow is accumulating. For those staying down low, you'll want to avoid being on or under very steep slopes and keep your distance from cliff areas.

    As you climb above the rain/snow line, you will find new wind slabs forming throughout the day. Stubborn wind slabs that formed under NW flow earlier this week could still be lurking. The higher you go, the more likely you will be to encounter wind slabs ranging from 1 to 3 feet deep. In extreme terrain, wind blown snow can accumulate in unexpected patterns. You may find wind-drifted snow below ridges or mid-slope where cross loading has deposited snow to the sides of gullies or terrain features.

    Temperatures below and near treeline did not dip below freezing last night, and as a result the moist surface layers did not refreeze. As the mercury continues to rise and rain adds weight to the snowpack, these surface layers may release as a wet loose avalanche. Watch for pinwheels or rollerballs as a sign of instability and express caution in, under, or near extreme terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

The upper elevations of Mount Shasta will be the only location in the forecast area picking up snow today. The Eddy Mountains and Ash Creek Butte will receive this moisture as rain and temperatures will hold steady above freezing. Those willing to brave a few thousand feet of ascension through the rain and slush will find a bit of fresh snow as the reward.
