Points saillants

Mother Nature is cranking the knob on the Shasta snow machine. Today and into the weekend, southerly flow will bring a series of robust winter storms to the area. New snow totals will be measured in feet. Expect increasing avalanche danger immediately during and just after storm cycles. Wind and storm slab avalanche problems are on the docket. Avalanche danger may peak later tonight or tomorrow morning as heavy snowfall piles up. Tread lightly in avalanche terrain and learn to recognize the 5 red flags of avalanche danger.

    New snow and wind...you know what that means...wind slabs! South/southwest flow will create the potential for wind slab avalanches in near and above treeline terrain on NW-N-NE-E-SE facing slopes. Wind will erode the upwind side of an obstacle such as a ridge and deposit snow on the downwind side, 10x more rapidly than snow falling from the sky. Be suspicious of any steep slope with recent deposits of wind drifted snow. Look for smooth, rounded, lens or pillow shaped deposits that feel slabby, may sound hollow and crack under the weight of a rider. The longer the crack, the more risk for avalanche potential.

    When new snowfall amounts within a 24 period exceed 6 inches, storm slab avalanches should be on your radar. Good up slope, south flow with the incoming storms will produce snow heavy at times. Storm slabs are the release of a cohesive layer of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Widespread surface hoar (weak layer when buried) was observed below and near treeline yesterday and remained intact at close of business. Your hackles should stiffen for storm slab avalanches later today, tonight and tomorrow morning as new snow rapidly accumulates. 

Avalanche Discussion

This Saturday, Dec 10  is the MSAC Movie Night at the Mt. Shasta Community Center. We're showing the film "Buried" about the 1982 Alpine Meadows avalanche. Written, directed, and produced by Tahoe locals, the film chronicles one of the deadliest avalanches in US history, the miraculous rescue efforts, and the impact on the community of Lake Tahoe. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Doors open at 5:30, film at 7. We'll see you there!
