Points saillants

Ridgetop winds from the NE increased to gale force last night, drifting and redistributing snow on the ground. This blowing and drifting snow has formed into cohesive slabs on the downwind side of ridgetops and in gully features. Consider avoiding slopes that hold fresh deposits of wind drifted snow.

    Ridgetop winds out of the NE began scouring and redistributing the top 3 to 12+ inches of snowpack yesterday. Substantial scouring, drifting, and new wind slab formation are expected to have occurred last night as wind speeds increased into the 75 to 120 mph range. Expect to encounter areas of unstable wind slab mainly above treeline and near treeline. Isolated wind slabs may exist below treeline in some areas due to the strength of the winds. Expect a mix of both hard and soft wind slabs.

    Clues exist to help identify slopes that hold newly formed wind slabs. Look for recent avalanches, visible blowing snow, cornices formed within the past 24 hours, wind drifts, snow surface texture, and snow surface cracking. Consider avoiding avalanche terrain on specific slopes where clues indicate the presence of newly formed wind slabs. Strong sunshine on newly formed wind slabs may increase the sensitivity to triggering in some areas.

    Yesterday, NE winds were increasing along the Mt. Judah ridgeline. These NE winds were transporting snow, building new cornices and wind slabs on S-SW-W-NW aspects.

Avalanche Discussion

Below average air temperatures and cool NE flow are expected to keep problematic areas of surface wet snow from forming today. A wet loose avalanche problem is expected to become more of a widespread issue starting tomorrow as winds decrease and air temperatures warm. Cornice fall may become an issue as substantial warming occurs this weekend. This is very dependent on how much the large cornices along ridgelines are eroded by the current NE wind event.
