Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche on a wind-drifted slope which breaks into a deeper, more dangerous slide. Southwesterly and westerly winds have drifted snow into stiff slabs on upper-elevation slopes and exposed areas at lower elevations. Easterly slopes are the most dangerous areas. Avoid wind-drifted terrain such as slopes below cornices, gully features, slopes below ridgelines, or where you encounter stiff surface conditions. Retreat to less-steep slopes or more wind-sheltered areas if you experience cracking or collapsing. Lower-elevation areas and slopes less than about thirty five degrees offer safer options.
