Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow require caution. Large and, in isolated cases, very large wet slab avalanches are possible in some places.

In all aspects medium-sized and large moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of the rain. As a consequence of the rain there will be an increase in the danger of gliding avalanches and wet snow slides. On wind-loaded slopes the avalanches can penetrate even deep layers and reach quite a large size. Great caution and restraint are recommended. Backcountry tours should be started and concluded early.

Snowpack Structure

Various wind slab layers are lying mostly on a moist old snowpack. In particular, however, sometimes large wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally in the high Alpine regions. The spring-like weather conditions gave rise to thorough wetting of the snowpack. As a consequence of the rain the prevalence and size of these avalanche prone locations will increase.
