Moderate danger due to naturally triggered glide-snow avalanches

Problèmes avalancheux

  • Gliding snow

  • Wind slab

    • Toutes altitudes

Tendency

Boxing Day will bring mild weather and strong westerly winds on the eastern rim of the Alps. The danger of slab avalanches will continue to recede, the gliding snow problem will persist. The entire team at the Avalanche Warning Service of Styria wishes one and all Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

Avalanche Activity

Moderate danger due to naturally triggered glide-snow avalanches

Avalanche danger is moderate at all altitudes. In wind-loaded extremely steep gullies and bowls in all aspects, slab avalanches can be triggered by large additional loading. On steep grass-covered slopes and in forest clearances, naturally triggered glide-snow and wet-snow avalanches can be expected which in isolated cases can place exposed transportation routes at risk. Glide cracks are indicators of potential danger, zones below them should be avoided.

Snowpack Structure

The fresh snow and drifts of the last few days have settled well and are bonded with the old snowpack. The snow cover is nearly isotherm up to high altitudes and often wet at ground level. Over smooth ground the entire snowpack is gliding downhill.

Weather Forecast

On Christmas Day weather conditions will improve noticeably in Styria, it will be intermittently sunny, though the W/NW winds in eastern regions will still be stormy. Further west and south, only moderate westerly winds. At 2000 m: +3 to +7 degrees.
