Avalanche Summary

Avoid steep slopes with signs of recent wind-drifted snow. You can identify slabs of drifted snow by their rounded and smooth appearance. These drifts will also feel much harder underfoot than softer, sheltered, relatively safer slopes. Avalanches that you trigger can break near the ground, taking the entire season's snowpack with it. Steep rocky areas with a shallower snowpack are the areas you are more likely to trigger a large avalanche.
