Points saillants

During the past two days there have been four separate close calls in the Teton area. These all involved skiers or snowboarders who ventured into steep avalanche starting zones. Similar events are possible today in the Slat River and Wyoming Ranges. Conservative terrain choices are warranted. Loose snow sluffs are possible on steep sunlit aspects if skies remain clear.

Soft surface slabs up to two feet deep lie upon hard melt-freeze crusts, sun crusts, and in some areas wind packed snow. These slabs could be triggered by the weight of a single person in steep avalanche terrain, particularly along high ridge crests and in steep avalanche starting zones.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Instability in a northwest flow will continue to bring snow showers to the mountains. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy. Accumulations will be spotty but locally heavy, brief snow showers are expected. Temperatures will drop to near zero overnight and rise into the teens to low 20s during the day. Winds will be light and variable. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE above an elevation of 7,500 feet. Pockets of surface slab up to two feet in depth could be triggered by the weight of a single person in steep avalanche prone terrain. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.
